esteban adame cut his teeth djing at the ditch parties and house parties of east la in the 90s. he then moved to detroit to apprentice with mad mike banks, performing as part of los hermanos and galaxy to galaxy. more than twenty years on, he still lives and breathes music. this is his debut record for mister saturday night records, raw and joyful.

following on from his intimate entry into the dj-kicks mix series, lone is putting out a vinyl only ep of all the unreleased tracks from it. the horizontal mix tapped into all of lones influences, from hip-hop to house, idm to techno. it also showcased some producers signed to his own magic wire label, and of course the back bone was built from some of the nottingham mans freshest new productions. they come after celebrated releases on werk discs, r&s and dekmantel, and include dance floor aligned eps and more rounded full lengths designed for close listening. here he sits in between the two across three thrilling cuts. opener ‘saturday night is a breezy bit of deep house with crisp boom-baps and swirling pads that lend it a dreamy, ethereal feel. spoken word snippets are stitched into the groove and the whole thing is as frictionless and feel good as house comes. next up, ‘arc is a little more direct, with scattered snares flapping over dry wooden kicks. its a punchy bit of house latest dj-kicks mix star kerri chandler would be proud, and comes overlaid with spring time flutes and luscious pads as a classically inclined bassline powers things along. last but not least is ‘alpha wheel 4 (ambient mix), a kaleidoscopic passage of suspensory sound scuffed up glassy surfaces trapping you in rays of refracted light from start to finish. all three tracks exhibit lones authentic, lived in and lo-fi aesthetic, and as a result slip perfectly into his ever more essential discography.

following on from the ability ii pressure re-release, major problems and compassion cuts present another in-house favourite from their vaults: the sublime garage/rnb earworm dont tell me (how love should feel) by 2-bmw. a tony humphries/zanzibar favourite, the sole release on life of luxury in 1990 was new jersey producer larry p rauson’s first cut, and never saw a full release. it’s presented with three remarkable dubs from the mysterious man in bed, two of which in turn are flipped by compassion crew and, completing the circle, by larry himself. full colour cover with matt finish. restored and mastered by thomas p heckmann at trope. cut by andreas kauffelt at schnittstelle. artwork by mel keane. larry on dont tell me: tony played the song at zanzibar (on a) saturday night. that sunday morning my phone was blowing up... that weekend gave me the moment of my career. i was an engineer at the local cable company. listening to tony humphries on the radio, not expecting it, tony humphries played my record on his show... i did not last much longer at that job.

shore is a vibraphonist and composer based in brooklyn. eamon harkin and justin carter from mister saturday night met him through nyc music institution, nublu, where he worked with the legendary jazz maestro butch morris and sex mob and tom waits drummer kenny wollesen. at the very first planetarium listening session, where eamon and justin blend records into live performances for people sprawled on the floor of a loft for six hours, one of justin s friends leaned over to him and asked, -what is this record? it s amazing.- it wasn t a record. it was shore, playing a hundred times in the corner of the room.

a belter of a double-sided monster. welcome to the brilliant herbie hancock with the always in-demand slinky groover stars in your eyes on the much coveted 11.21 -special disco remix-. this is quite simply one of the smoothest disco rides you will ever take with a production made in heaven and a vocalist supreme with gavin christopher taking it to another level. featuring an extended percussion break from the fantastic sheila e, this a very different mix to the original album version and was never widely circulated at the time. so another nice rare gem. as double-siders go, this really takes some beating.

it’s not very widely known but, when he’s not digging for other people’s music to play out at the party, mister harkin spends a good deal of his time in the studio making some of his own. up to now, those efforts have made their way onto records for the always on point argot imprint in chicago and nyc’s own throne of blood. and although he’s djed at almost 250 mister saturday night & sunday parties since we got going in 2009, this is his debut release on the label. it’s made up of three spaciously sculpted club scorchers, ripe and ready for the power hour, and we’re super stoked to finally be able to share them with you.

alex falk first showed up on our radar back in 2013 when his terse ep dropped on tennessee-based label proper trax. that record – specifically -ptr-, which we pitched way down and turned way up – was a regular fixture on our platters, so we were stoked when the man in knoxville got in touch with these groove-heavy, stripped-back floor fillers that now make up the anjuna ep.

atlus is a young man with the world on his shoulders. he holds it from misty glasgow, where he spends most of his time in the halls of rubadub. in the three songs on this epic ep, he lifts up party-melting disco house, clanging ambience and bubbling techno – and not for a second does he hint at letting the ball drop. the first of many, many records from him, we hope. this kid’s a titan.

nathan melja is the same young frenchman whose debut ep we released under the name melja late last year. since then, he moved to new york and worked at mister hq for a few months, manned the light booth at the mister saturday night and mister sunday parties (djs make the best light guys), and spent most of his time outside that making music. leo draws is the culmination of that music-making, two murky but beautiful tracks centered around vocal samples and one off-kilter number aimed at the dark corners of the dancefloor.

general ludd is rich mcmaster from new jersey and tom marshallsay from canterbury. the guys met at the glasgow art school, where rich studied environmental art and tom studied fine art. their first collaborations were interactive sound installations, but that quickly gave way to all night music making sessions. this is their second ep for us – a more left field turn than their first, but, we can assure you, both tracks will break discerning dancefloors wide open.

archie pelago is a trio from brooklyn. greg plays cello, zack plays saxophone, and dan plays trumpet and works the knobs. the archie guys did one of the very first releases on mister saturday night records, and we’re very happy to have them back – especially with such brilliant tunes. the a side, clammy customer, takes dozens of twists and turns, weaving in vocals by the always excellent gabriel garzon-montano, and the b side, madame suede nightshade, was apparently made with us in mind (check the initials). both sides are tried and tested on our dancefloor and cut at 45rpm for maximum oomph.

san francisco/paris-based label spring theory is back with its fourth release. called sweet bitter love, it s a four track ep of manic sample-driven house from keita sano, a japanese producer who s been on a roll lately with releases for like-minded imprints discos capablanca, mister saturday night, and strictly groove recordings. sweet bitter love kicks off with the tripped-out flair of -once i found a diamond.- it s an uplifiting bongo-led cut with dubby melodics that sound like the kind of thing sleeping bag records would have put out in the early 80s. jacques renault provides a leaner peak-time version — complete with hard-hitting snares and growling bass — via his -once i found a diamond (jacques renault trouble funk remix).- things take a turn for the delightfully weird on the ep s namesake -sweet bitter love.- starting like a straightforward house cut, it explodes into a psychedelic collage of spaghetti western guitars, tribal calls, displaced jazz fills, and other forms of cleverly sampled soundtrack exotica. the release wraps up with yet another curveball on -bouzouk.- here sano lays out a subwoofer-knocking ny garage house rhythm that takes a left turn with frenzied bouzouki playing charting arpeggios through a haze of echoing foreign voices. taken as a whole, sweet bitter love is that rare idiosyncratic bomb of an ep that will keep your dancers moving and your trainspotters guessing — in other words, it s spring theory through and through.

next up on ellum witnesses the salubrious dino lenny delivers a double-header of epic proportions on his its saturday single. the a side its saturday’ is a heavy as hell piece of colossal techno loaded with a kick like a mule and enigmatic vocals to boot. on the flip and we are indulged with another hefty affair i am changing, with another vocal led jacking heavy hitter with vocals courtesy of dino again. serious stuff for discerning dance floors, speakers beware! dino has been making music for since the late 90’s having remixed everyone from madonna to underworld, and have been championed by everyone from peter tong, the chemical brothers and maceo plex. this fantastic ellum debut is tantamount to his electronic wizardry.

gunnar haslam is a long-time regular at the mister. by day he s a scholar of particle physics and signal processing, and by night he makes very heady music, some of which has made its way onto our very first ten-inch release. it was printed on heavy vinyl and comes in an antique green paper sleeve.

dagoblack is a part time project by joe lentini and erik mccoy. the release includes remixes by someone else(sean oneal) and tony g from philly (tony gabor).

a producer from maisons-alfort, france was too young to attend the nighttime parties but heard some msn releases, & made 3 jams that eamon & justin have been caning for months.

(a special triple vinyl edition of all the unreleased tracks is being released in conjunction with the cd.)
